Zulal Wellness Resort organizes mangroves plantation and preservation program
To mark the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem
Doha, Qatar, 27 July 2022: As part of its efforts to raise awareness on preserving the natural resources and promoting a sustainable and healthy environment in Qatar, Zulal Health Resort by Msheireb Properties, in partnership with UNESCO, organized a mangrove plantation program.
This coincided with the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangroves Ecosystem, which is celebrated annually on July 26.
Mangroves are regarded as one the most important and natural means to address climate change and mitigate its effects. They serve as buffers against environmental disasters, as they can absorb up to six to eight times more carbon dioxide than a typical forest.
The event aimed to raise awareness of the importance of preserving and protecting the mangrove ecosystem by implementing environmental solutions that will contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change.
Several activations were held including the planting of mangrove seedlings, an exclusive kayak tour around the mangroves, and many educational and entertainment events.
Maryam Sultan Al-Jassim, Manager of Communication and Public Relations, Msheireb Properties, underlined the importance of mangroves to the natural ecosystem in Qatar. “In this event, we are highlighting the value of plants and trees as a source of environmental diversity and a key player in preserving our ecosystem as well as human health. We are proud to take part in this national effort to protect our heritage and maintain a healthy environment for our future generations.”
Mangrove trees are found in natural abundance at the Zulal Wellness Resort and the Al Dakhira area of Qatar, as well as along the nation’s coast. They prevent soil erosion and habitat loss. It also serves as a home, feeding ground, and nursery for a variety of living creatures. Several organisms can be found on the mangroves themselves, around the root system, or in the surrounding forest.
