Msheireb Mosque at Msheireb Downtown Doha receives ‘Abdullatif Alfozan Award for Mosque Architecture’

Doha, Qatar, 15th March, 2017: Msheireb Mosque, located in the heritage quarter of Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD), has been awarded the prestigious ‘Abdullatif Alfozan Award for Mosque Architecture’ which honors mosques in the GCC for their sustainability and architectural features.

Msheireb Mosque has won the award, thanks to its adoption of new technologies and meticulously planned architectural features that helped it to surpass 122 other mosques nominated for the award. The design of the building is based on traditional Qatari mosques, which have for centuries used orientation, shading, natural ventilation and water to create comfortable environments for prayer and worship.

The building has received the Gold LEED accreditation for its effective energy conservation, along with the quality of its design. It incorporates a tailored daylight design, to create dynamic sun patches inspired by Qatari motifs within the main hall during prayer hours, and needs no artificial lighting during daytime hours. Embracing key principles of Islamic art, geometric patterns and designs, Msheireb Mosque fuses modernist ideas with a historically familiar arrangement of Islamic volumes, spaces and thresholds.

With its new design and architecture concept, Msheireb Mosque was inaugurated in Ramadan 2016. The mosque is located within Phase 1 of Msheireb Down Town, and spread over an area of 1,400 sqm. Easily accessible from around the Msheireb neighbourhood and the adjoining souq area, the mosque has prayer halls for both men and women and accommodates 600 worshippers. It also has a dedicated parking area and lifts from the basement.

 

MEEZA signs second phase contract with Msheireb Properties establishing Msheireb Downtown Doha, the most pioneering smart city in the world

Doha, Qatar – March 8, 2017 – MEEZA, Qatar’s prominent end-to-end Managed IT Services & Solutions Provider, has signed an operational contract with Msheireb Properties for the Smart City ICT package at Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD), the most pioneering smart city in the world. The signing ceremony, which took place on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 2017 QITCOM Exhibition and Conference, appoints MEEZA as the Master System Integrator for the ICT Operations at Msheireb Downtown Doha.
This agreement, initially inked in 2014, has concluded phase one; which included the design and implementation stages, with the agreement is gearing in to its second phase for operations. Msheireb Properties will leverage MEEZA’s Smart Technologies and years-long expertise in building Smart Cities, towards developing the technological infrastructure for designing, managing and monitoring processes at MDD.

Msheireb Properties awards car parking management contract to Mawaqif Qatar

Msheireb Mosque and the National Archive two iconic properties within Msheireb Downtown Doha, Msheireb Properties flagship urban regeneration project, were bestowed the honours due to their excellence in the successful execution of sustainability in master planning. Msheireb Mosque captured the prize in the religious building category, while the National Archive was the winner in the government buildings classification.

Qatar Sustainability Awards are officiated by Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC) and aim to recognize the efforts, commitment, and contributions of individuals, institutions and organizations in furthering sustainable development and environmental protection in Qatar and beyond. A jury, comprised of senior sustainability and green building experts, practitioners and sustainability academics were charged with choosing the winners from a competitive list of nominees.

Accordingly, the Msheireb Mosque and the National Archive have been recently awarded LEED gold certification and platinum certification respectively, denoting excellence in green building strategies and practices. These two newly built structures have achieved maximum energy efficiency in construction and design, which restrict reliance on air-conditioning units via environmentally friendly applications. Their energy recovery air systems allow the precooling and regulation of indoor temperatures and their superior district cooling systems deliver chilled water through low energy consumption. Further energy mitigation features, include solar panelling that generate high levels of usable electricity in both buildings throughout the entire year.

Qatar Financial Centre Announces Relocation to Msheireb Downtown Doha

The Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) announced today its relocation to Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD). New QFC firms will be able to operate from this new designation starting mid-2017. Existing firms can decide to migrate then, or starting 2018. This relocation will serve as a foundation for Qatar’s new financial city.

Unlike other financial zones in the region, this new financial city will be open to all businesses, local and international and will not be exclusively restricted to QFC licensed firms. As such, it will be closer to other international financial and business districts. The mixed-use development will comprise more than 100 buildings, with a combination of prime commercial and residential properties, retail, cultural and entertainment areas.

The inclusion of a number of national entities and government buildings within Msheireb Downtown Doha as a whole represents a significant step toward the realisation of deeper collaboration and economic integration. Msheireb Downtown Doha will encompass five heritage quarters and multiple geographic phases. Tenants will include major government buildings, heritage quarters, four heritages houses within Msheireb Museums, a school and the National Archive, as well as the recently opened Mosque. The result will be a lively urban neighbourhood, which as well as hosting the Qatar Financial Centre and its licensed firms, will also offer leisure facilities and a number of residences including townhouses, upscale apartments and hotels, all centred around a new public square, Barahat Msheireb.

Announcing the QFC’s newest and largest designation, CEO Yousuf Mohamed Al-Jaida said: “The Qatar National Vision 2030 economic development pillar stipulates the need for open and flexible economic structures, which QFC offers through its business-friendly platform. Following the QFC’s relocation and move of QFC firms, other QFC entities including the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority (QFCRA), the Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre (QICDRC) and the Qatar Finance and Business Academy (QFBA) will relocate as well. Their relocation is expected to be complete in 2019.
